Ruben Garcia Mayo, age 79, transitioned peacefully at home on September 28, 2020, surrounded by family.

Ruben was born on October 28, 1940, in Lipa City, Philippines to the late Pedro and Catalina Mayo. He came to the United States in 1964 under his parents’ intent that he attend medical school. Shortly after, he got a job at The Luau in Los Angeles, California which began his lifetime passion of and service in the hospitality industry. There would be no profession in medicine. In 1966, Ruben relocated to Cincinnati, Ohio to manage the Kon-Tiki Restaurant and Cocktail Lounge, launching his long career as one of Cincinnati’s most beloved maître d’s.

With a career spanning 40 years, Ruben worked at some of the finest restaurants and country clubs in Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky including the Lookout Supper Club, Windjammer, Celestial, Kenwood Country Club, Metropolitan Club and Western Hills Country Club from where he retired in 2009. While his meticulous attention to detail and outstanding conversationalist skills made him a favorite with clientele, it was Ruben’s dedication and guidance to the service staff that made a deep impact in many lives. Serving as a father figure to many, Ruben was deeply admired and respected.

Ruben is survived by his devoted wife Ruth Mayo (nee Leurck); cherished sons Alex Mayo of Seattle, WA, Joel Mayo of Loveland, OH and Marc Mayo of Cincinnati, OH; stepdaughter Betty Douglas of Cincinnati, OH; stepson Marty (Wendy) Douglas of Arlington, TN; stepdaughter Loretta (Roger) Kohrs of Batavia, OH; twelve grandchildren in Washington, New Jersey, Kentucky, Tennessee and Ohio; three great-grandchildren in Kentucky and Tennessee; brother Nilo (Lourdes) Mayo of Los Angeles, CA; brother Ismael (Zeny) Mayo of Los Angeles, CA and former wife Kristina (Gary) Stanford, nee Fightmaster, of West Chester, OH.

Ruben was preceded in death by his father Pedro Mayo of Los Angeles, CA; mother Catalina Mayo of Los Angeles, CA; brother Celso Mayo of Lipa City, Philippines and stepson David Douglas of Sharonville, OH.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 1, 2020, from 3:00-4:00 p.m. with services beginning at 4:00 p.m. at the Spring Grove Funeral Homes, 4389 Spring Grove Ave, Cincinnati, OH 45223. Visitation will continue from 5:00-6:00 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made in Ruben’s name to LifeCenter (lifepassiton.org) or Westwood First Presbyterian Church (wfpc.org).
