Mary Jane Flege (nee House), 84, born April 14, 1936, passed away February 5th 2021. Beloved wife of the late Joseph Flege. Loving mother of Mark, David and Steven, Loving Mother in law to Margo, Missy and Mary Ellen. Dear Gram of Sara, Mel, Jack, Luke, Noah and Ally, and caring sister to Michael and Harold. In the early 70’s, while raising her sons, Mary Jane founded the Over-the-Rhine Senior Job Registry. Located in the downtown Senior Citizens Center, the registry helped to connect working seniors with available community jobs. In 1971, she teamed up with some fellow community activists to launch the Sycamore Senior Adult Multi Service Center. The center created a community gathering point for seniors and provided services like Meals on Wheels, transportation services and pot luck dinners among other things. In 1980 while working at Pogues Department store, Mary Jane wrote a proposal for the store to support professional women with a dedicated department. The idea was enthusiastically embraced and she became the Director of the Pogues Professional Women’s Department. With her women “breaking barriers” passion, she joined forces with Betty Finney to start the Careers Professional Center an image consulting firm. Working with for profit and non-profit organizations, Mary Jane and Betty coached professionals on the non-verbal—dress for success, first impression—cues of the executive world. While the entrepreneurial Mary Jane was ever present, the nurturing Mrs. Flege was always there. She became known as “Mrs. Tuesday”. For years, every Tuesday she was at St. Josephs School library in the West End to read and teach to read the children she adored. Chicken farmer, apple grower, gardener, she had many passions and we all have a favorite Mary Jane story to help us remember. We loved her. We will miss her. And we will always remember that she loved us “a Bushel and a Peck”.
