GREENHILLS - Herb (Herbert Edward) Nichols entered his eternal home on May 28, 2021 at the age of 90. He was born in Akron, OH on February 13, 1931 to the late Verna and Herbert Nichols. Herb was the beloved husband of Joy (nee Harvey) Nichols, whom he married in 1952.
After graduating from the University of Akron in 1954, Herb began his career at General Electric, moving to Cincinnati as part of the company's engineer training program. He then attended the University of Cincinnati and obtained his Masters in Mechanical Engineering.
The Nichols family were members of Roselawn Community Baptist Church for over 25 years and were instrumental in the church's successful planting of Montgomery Community Baptist Church in 1980. Members of now Montgomery Community Church for over 40 years, Herb humbly served in a host of ministries and sang in the choir, alongside Joy.
Herb took great pride in his thirty-nine year career at GE Aviation, where colleagues quickly became lifelong friends to both he and Joy.
Known for his passion for learning, Herb was a tutor and mentor at Windsor School, and actively tutored all of his grandchildren. He served as President of the Greenhills HS Music Boosters and volunteered with Boy Scouts of America leaving a legacy of six Eagle Scouts. A lifelong patron of the arts including The Pops, Cincinnati Symphony and Playhouse in the Park, Herb also enjoyed his family's countless music recitals, wind symphony, jazz and percussion concerts, competitive marching band performances and community parades.
Herb's humor and wit are legendary, his generosity knew no bounds and his love of family motivated his every decision. In recent years, Herb's greatest source of pride has been his grandchildren. He leaves behind Joy, the love of his life for 69 years. He also leaves his sister, Marjory Steffensen, of Akron, Ohio, three sons; Paul (Cathy) Nichols, Ralph (Clelia) Nichols, and Glenn (Marcene) Nichols, and seven grandchildren; Matthew (Nitya), Christopher, Brian, Emery, Olivia, Quinn and Aaron Nichols.
The family is being served by Spring Grove Funeral Homes and is holding private services. Messages of condolence can be shared by visiting www.springgrove.org.
