Obituary

Donald Ray Gurney passed away peacefully on April 3, 2021 at age 83 surrounded by his loving family. Don is survived by his wife Nancy Gurney (nee Condon), son Scott (Sara) Gurney and daughter Amy (John) Getgey, grandchildren Margaret Hertlein, Grace Gurney, Gillian Gurney, Lauren Getgey, Parker Getgey, Andrew Getgey, and Mollie Getgey, great-grandchildren Elliot Hertlein and Audrey Hertlein, and sister Patricia Malone.

Don was born in Oakland, California and raised in Cincinnati. He graduated from the Kentucky Military Institute in 1955 and from Denison University in 1959 where he met Nancy, made many life-long friends, and was president of the Sigma Chi fraternity. Don had a long career as VP of Sales with the Sawbrook Steel Casting Co. in Lockland before retiring in 1999. He loved playing and watching sports, was a life-long golfer, and was the qualifying medalist and a semifinalist in the 1953 Greater Cincinnati Junior MET championship.

Don and Nancy married in 1960 and were blessed with 60 years together. They loved dancing, raising their family, spending time and traveling with their friends, and indulging their grandchildren. They were deeply connected in their beloved Village of Mariemont where they lived for 53 years.

Don was a devoted father who loved coaching Scott and Amy's youth sports teams and never missed their school events. When the kids were young, he loved packing up the "woody" station wagon for vacations in Michigan, Florida, the New Jersey shore and elsewhere with extended family and friends. He spent many hours fishing, boating, water skiing and riding the waves with Amy and Scott, and later shared these favorite pastimes on vacations with his grandchildren. Don and Nancy also enjoyed traveling extensively throughout the U.S., North America, Europe, and Australia with family and friends.

After retiring, Don was active in the Mariemont Kiwanis, volunteered in numerous school levies, helped advise the Mariemont Elementary Builder's Club, judged students' Memorial Day essay entries, and was awarded the 2017 Friend of the School Award by the Mariemont Board of Education. He and Nancy enjoyed long walks in Mariemont, always stopping to chat with neighbors and greet their dogs with a treat. But his favorite activity in retirement was attending his grandchildren's frequent sports games and school events, often driving with Nancy from one game to another in the same day to cheer them on.

In 2017, Don and Nancy moved to the Twin Lakes Senior Living Community in Montgomery and then to the Marjorie P. Lee Retirement Community in Hyde Park. Even as Don's health declined, he continued to make deep connections with other residents, staff and caregivers. He enjoyed singing in the choir, playing his harmonica ("Ode to Joy" was his favorite piece), sitting by the pond watching the ducks, doing puzzles and chatting with new friends, always with Nancy by his side.

Don's only regret in life was Nancy's long and continuing struggle with Alzheimer's. He would always pray for a cure and ask what else could be done for her. Even in his final days, he remained by her side, holding her hand, more concerned about her care than his.

Don was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, friend and neighbor. He was deeply loved and will be greatly missed.

Visitation will be held on Friday, April 9th at Spring Grove Funeral Home, 4389 Spring Grove Ave, Cincinnati, from 10-11 AM. Funeral Services will be conducted at 11 AM by Private Invitation only.
