Obituary

Deborah Kaye Leadbetter, age 74, Cincinnati, passed away suddenly on March 15th, 2023. Debbie was born in Dayton, Ohio, on May 12, 1948, the daughter of the late Helen Louise (Morrison) Bowman and Roscoe J Bowman. She was a 1966 graduate of Brookville High School, Brookville, Ohio. Secondary education took her to Ohio State University and Randolph-Macon College in Lynchburg, Virginia. She married her loving husband, Dr Michael Leadbetter, a high school friend, on June 1, 1974. Together they raised two beautiful daughters and she was the best "Mimi" to six grandchildren and one great- grand-son. She was an accomplished athlete from a very young age. Her accomplishments included dance and gymnastics in her early years, gaining her many awards at the local and state level; tennis and golf later in her life, gaining her many awards at the local, state and national level. She was an active member of the Greater Cincinnati Tennis and Golf Associations where she held leadership positions. She was a member of Coldstream Country Club for 37 years where she was honored to be a club champion. She became an avid scuba diver where she became trained in salvage diving. She loved boating and we can still picture her with her hat turned backwards, sunglasses on and speeding down the Ohio. She loved boating so much that she became a member of the Power Squadron to promote safe boating on the river. She was an extremely good water skier and taught the children at a young age. The family enjoyed years of boating and skiing on the Ohio and at Lake Norris in Tennessee. The family had a second home at Big Sky Montana for many years where snow skiing, hiking, and snowmobiling in Yellowstone Park were her greatest loves. She had always wanted to be a pilot. At the age of 46 she decided to fulfill her dream. She moved to Sanford Florida where she trained at the Comair Academy. She returned to Cincinnati where she joined The Flying Neutrons, in Blue Ash and eventually purchased her own plane. This began 10 years of flying adventures with family and flying friends. Debbie loved to write and one of the most enjoyable times of her life were the years she spent with Women Writing for a Change. She loved writing poetry and when she had the opportunity to take part in a writing retreat in Italy it spawned an avocation that she continued to the very end. Debbie had an enormous heart and a passion for helping others. She led a full and vibrant life, and was blessed to be part of a large extended family and to have an enormous number of friends that greatly enriched her life. Friends and family described Debbie as cool, fun, adventurous, caring, welcoming to all, and much loved. She was truly one of a kind, an inspiration to all and her laugh and smile will forever live in our hearts and minds. Debbie is survived by her husband, Mike, daughter Julie, San Francisco, California; brother Jack Bowman Dayton, Ohio; son-in law Jason Dearwester, grandchildren Joshua Dearwester, Boise Idaho; Jacob Dearwester, Willow Dearwester, Joah Dearwester, Happy Dearwester, Julien Dearwester and great grandson Erza Dearwester all of Cincinnati.
