Dale Lynn McGirr passed away at peace with the world on January 11, 2022 at age 73. He was born to Junior Arthur McGirr and Hazel Katherine McGirr (nee Trott). He lost his parents and step-mother Aunt Margaret Heckeman long ago. He is predeceased by two older brothers, Richard McGirr in 2013 and John McGirr in 2020. He is survived by his wife of years Geraldine (Gerri, nee Schillig) McGirr, his sister Margaret (Peg) Nichols (Fred), James McGirr (Karen) and Susie Robbins.
Dale attended The Ohio State University as an Honors student, graduating in 1970 with a degree in Corporate Finance. Using a deferral from his Air Force ROTC duty to attend graduate school, he completed a Masters in Public Administration and Public Finance in 1972. Dale served as an officer in the Air Force at Wright Patterson AFB as a Procurement Officer buying F-5E fighters. After his discharge, he went to work for the newly formed Ohio Legislative Budget Office doing non-partisan financial analyses for members of the Ohio General Assembly, and was also assigned as the monitoring staff for the Ohio Board of Regents. It was this latter assignment that convince Dale that Higher Education Administration at a large, public university was to be his chosen field. Such an opportunity appeared in 1977 when the City of Cincinnati University became the newest member of the State of Ohio University System. Dale started that summer as the Budget Director, became Assistant Vice President for Finance in 1980, and Vice President for Finance in 1985. He later became Sr. Vice President for Finance and Planning and retired in 2006. He made many improvements to systems and policies over the years, but his most innovative changes were in two areas: 1. He led the creation of neighborhood development corporations in all the surrounding neighborhoods and partnered with them to create many new developments over the years that have changed the character of Uptown Cincinnati; 2. He led the team to create the new Campus Master Plan in 1989, which has re-branded the University of Cincinnati at a national scale. That has contributed to UC's continuous growth in enrollment, quality of applicant, and growing research program ever since.
At a personal level, Dale and Gerri were married in 1969 after five years of engagement. It was the greatest gift to be together for all these years. They loved to travel and have visited over 30 countries over the years. Dale and Gerri had no children, but made a commitment to children in 1981 that they would provide many children with opportunities they would not otherwise have. The ultimately focused in three areas over the years: travel, college scholarships, and hosting foreign exchange students. In the years since then, Dale and Gerri have provided domestic and European travel together to over 20 children ranging from nieces and nephews, to Godchildren, and family friends' children. And they have hosted 13 exchange students from Spain as well, keeping connections, and visiting Spain frequently to see them to this day. All these children are real parts of our lives and given us more back that we ever gave them.
Dale loved Gerri like no other. And together, they loved their work, their lives, and their connections with children. A life well lived is a treasure to take and remember with pride.
