Betty Jean (Harris) McKenzie was born on January 10, 1938 in New Brockton, Alabama to the late James and Allenah (Cole) Harris. She peacefully went Home to be with the Lord on Thursday, October 29, 2020.
Betty attended school at New Brockton High School and later finished her education at Hughes High School in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1969. In 1953, she married James R. Flowers (deceased) and to this union three children were born, Burnel, Arthur (deceased) and Beverly. She worked at St. Elizabeth Hospital as a custodian before beginning a 50+ year employment at Sisters of Mercy of Walnut Hills.
She was a faithful member of Beulah Missionary Baptist Church for many years, uniting under the leadership of Rev. David Glenn. She served in many ministries, such as The Fanetta Ross Choir, The Kitchen Ministry, Prison Ministry, Missionary Society; Pastoral Committee and Senior Ministry; but her heart was always with Tender Mercies. She sang in many choirs and her strong voice was always ready to render a song whenever called upon. Her favorite song was “Jesus Saves”, which she sang at church the Sunday before she passed away. She loved that song and when she sang it, you could feel it was a testimony to her. Betty loved the Lord and her church family. She always managed to find the “good” in people. She loved swimming at the YMCA, attending exercise classes at Curves and she was an avid bowler.
Later in life, she met and married Rozel McKenzie; a loving union that lasted 31 years. You rarely saw one without the other.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents; Queen Ester Harris (who raised her from the age of 4); husband, Rozel; son, Arthur (Randy); stepdaughter, Rozonne McKenzie; siblings, Helen Burrows, Woodrow McGowan and Van Gray; brother-in-law, Ammie Haynes; and daughter-in-law, Patricia Ann McKenzie.
She leaves to cherish her memory, son, Burnel (Gloria); daughter, Beverly Jean; daughter-in-law, Jeanette Flowers; stepsons, Gregory, Gary (Beverly) and Darrell (Tanya) McKenzie; sisters, Dorothy Haynes and Christine C. Turner; brothers, Milton and Joe Harris; brother-in-law, Joseph Burrows; 19 grandchildren, many great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren as well as nieces, nephews, cousins and her Beulah church family.
