Bernard was born July 17, 1931 to Sherman Mays and Lodema Hurley. He grew up in Hazelwood Ohio and graduated from Sycamore High School. He married Betty Mays in 1965 and they raised 3 wonderful children together.
He worked for the Us Postal Service for 31 years and retired May 3, 1992. He also served in the Korean War for the U.S. Army. He truly enjoyed his retirement and spent time helping others. He loved to share his story with others as he frequently visited Walmart and CVS.
Bernard was the wonderful father to Debbie, Kevin and Renee, grandfather to Ben (LB) and Gabrielle (Gab). He also had five great grandchildren: Addison, Christian, Xavier, Lenox and Jaxon(deceased). He loved spending time with Xavier and Lenox who were close and often referred to them as his "XL". He also had several nieces and nephews who visited with him often and referred to him as "Uncle Bernie" or "Uncle B". In addition to his family, He was so blessed to have shared wonderful times and care from Nate Sheppard (his friend to the end) and Patsy Walker (known as Ms Pat) who took great care of him throughout his journey.
On November 29, 2021 at the age of 90, Bernard joined his wife Betty Mays, his Parents, Sister Jessie Mae Lattimore and great grandson Jaxon Hailey to be with the Lord, along with a host of other Loved ones. To treasure his memories and legacy he leaves his Brother Wayne Mays, family and friends whom he loved.
Bernard is now happy with his Loved ones and will be Missed and Cherished by many! Thank you All for being a part of his Story!
