Marlane LaDee Souder (Copenhaver), aged 68, died peacefully in her home surrounded by her children and grandchildren on May 12th, 2018. For those that knew Marlane knew her cancer battle was enduring but never defined her. Marlane was born on November 6th, 1949 in Cincinnati. She was immediately adopted by her loving parents, Harry and Lillian Copenhaver. Later in life she was reunited with her biological mother, Imogene Freeman and family from Harlan County, Kentucky.
Marlane grew up in Northside and returned there to live out her final years. She was known for her authenticity and exuberance. She was routinely found belly laughing at comedies, reading a book in her bed, or doing something with/for her grandchildren. She was deeply committed to equity and dignity for all people. Her heart to serve others was her greatest gift. From the side of the road, to serving at Tender Mercies, Marlane felt a true sense of joy in helping those in need around her.
Marlane was extremely proud of her work with the City of Cincinnati. She was retired from the Cincinnati Fire Department, serving as a Dispatch supervisor, and certified EMT.
She was honored to be a member of the North Avondale Community Friends Meeting. Quaker values of nonviolence, and the spirit of the Lord residing within, ran deep in her. These values were solidified when she met the loving, passionate members who welcomed her many years ago at the North Avondale meeting house.
For Marlane family was everything. She worked tirelessly to instill a deep capacity for love and compassion in all of her children and grandchildren. Marlane is survived by her children, Fred (Toshia), Misty (Bob), Andreya (Casey) and Leroy (Stephanie); her grandchildren, Norman (Brook), Mauralana, Alexis, Tino, Kelsey, Jazmynn, Maggie, Tasia, Ethan, Robert, Eli, Landen and Luke; her great-grandchildren, the baby girls, Aubrey and Abby; her sister Florence Ann; and her dearest friends, Liz, Danella, and Dot. Her passing leaves a deep hole in the extremely close tribe that she created.
A Celebration of Marlane’s Life will be held from 4:00 to 6:00 pm on Friday, May 18, 2018 at the Spring Grove Reception Center, 4389 Spring Grove Avenue, Cincinnati. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Community Friends Meeting, in Memory of Marlane Souder, Attn: Lynn Funck, Treasurer Community Friends Meeting, 4 Rowley Ct, Cincinnati, Ohio 45246.
