Mark Johann Hyams

February  5, 1998 – March 8, 2018

Mark, age 20, passed away suddenly on March 8, 2018. He was a sophomore at Miami University where he was majoring in Psychology. He was a graduate of St. Xavier High School, and attended Lakota schools K-8thgrade. He wasted many brain cells on video gaming, loved animals and donated tons of hours to community service. In 2015, he traveled to Guatemala on a school mission trip where the students assisted locals with building a school for underprivileged children. Mark lived with Type 1 Diabetes for over 12 years.  We always held out hope there would be a cure in his lifetime. Mark’s family would like to believe that he has been reunited with his father, Alan Hyams, his grandparents, Alois and Hilda Stadler and Stanley and Shirley Hyams as well as his pets Fritz, Lexi, and Smokey.  He will be greatly missed by his mother, Joan Schmitz, his bonus father, Guy Schmitz and his bonus sister, Kaylyn Schmitz. Mark is also survived by his aunt and uncle, Betsy and Jim Russell. His cousins, Sam and Matt Russell, were more like brothers. He also has family on his dad’s side that will miss him as well, including the Chakrin family, the Goldberg family, the Shaw Family, Deborah Lakin and Roslyn Plaxe.  Mark has several relatives in Germany that he was fortunate to spend time with in 2013. Six years ago, Mark and I were embraced with open arms by the entire Schmitz clan, so even though they are not “blood” relatives, they are most certainly family.  We are asking that no flowers or food be purchased for the family and funeral.  Instead, please make a donation to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) or a charity of your choice.

I am so terribly sorry for your profound loss. I know that there aren’t any words that can ease your pain, but I hope you find comfort in the promises God has made to us. He is near the broken hearted and He will be your strength and your fortress in difficult times. Mark is renewed and no longer bears the burden of diabetes. Joan, Bill and I will always treasure the emails you'd send about the adventure's you and Mark took annually. We always loved hearing how the two of you would hike mountains, canoe rivers and star gaze - just mother and son. I took those talks as a lesson in good parenting - on how to bond and keep close with your kids. Thank you for sharing your experiences with us. You are dear to us; please accept our condolences and the positive energy we will be sending you throughout the year. Much love, Joyce
