Obituary

Debora Kay Burstion was born June 10, 1952 in Cincinnati, Ohio to the late Augusta (Gussie) Moss nee Blanks and Rueben Jerome Burstion. She had the joy of sharing the same birthday as her mother. Debora departed this life on January 13, 2018.

Debbie was baptized and raised at New Prospect Baptist Church and later in 2006 joined Crossroads Community Church in Oakley where she was a dedicated member of “The Coffee Team.”

She attended the Cincinnati Public Schools of Evanston Elementary, Sawyer Junior High and graduated from Withrow High School in 1970. She later graduated from the School of Social Work at the University of Cincinnati in 1990.

Debbie worked as a health educator for the Central Community Health Board. Her work led her to facilitate groups at River City, Off the Streets Program at Anna Louise Inn, Bethany House, the Hamilton County Juvenile Center and various community based organizations throughout the Cincinnati. She also worked for Aids Volunteers of Cincinnati as the Minority HIV/AIDS Outreach Educator and previously she worked for the YWCA at the Alice Paul House Battered Women’s Shelter and led the Teen Choices program providing sexual education for youth.

Debbie spent her life volunteering her time. She served as the secretary and board member of NAACP during the late 80’s through early 90’s. In 1988, as part of Cincinnati’s Bicentennial Celebration she was honored as one of 200 great Cincinnatians. In 2015, she received a proclamation from City Hall for tirelessly working for over 25 years providing sexual education and prevention to the public. That same year she received the first Distinguished Alumni Award in the Educational field from Withrow High School.

Debbie had a strong love for her friends and family. She was a devoted sister, mother, aunt, cousin, grandmother and great grandmother and was very involved in all of their lives. She was always “the life of the party.” Her personality, smile, zest for life, dedication and humble love for God served as an example for all and she never met a stranger.

Debora leaves to cherish her memory her companion Lester Marshall; one aunt Odessa Cox in Los Angeles; one sister Michelle Burstion Hewitt Sr.(Nelson); three children: Jason Burstion Sr. (Wendii), Ayanna K. Burstion, and Ahmad Lockhart; eight grandchildren: Alexis, Jason Sr., Adriana, Jason Jr., Anbria, Aneyah, Terran, and Lilianna; two great-grandchildren: Jason Jr and Nova; two nieces: Michelle Jr. (Brian) and Maya F. Burstion; one nephew Joshua R Burstion; three great nieces: Jayla, Jaydn, and Savannah; lifelong friend Deborah Heater; godmother Katie Jackson; and a host of other friends and relatives.
