MATECHA, Emil, son of the late Andrew and Anne (Rohatynsky) Matecha, devoted brother of Elsie Robinson, and the late John Matecha, Beatrice Woloshyn, Mike Matecha, and Iris Harrison. Preceded in death by his long-time companion, Christine Letner. Cherished by the Davidson, Bause, Sardino, Summers, and Warnecke families; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and friends. Passed away peacefully on December 31, 2017.
Emil was born in Rhein, Saskatchewan, Canada on March 5, 1929 to Ukrainian immigrants from Galicia, Austria. Family life on the farm taught him self-reliance and resourcefulness, but most of all, respect for others. He was apprenticed as a fireplace and chimney mason at the age of seventeen. As owner of Zajac Chimney & Fireplace Company in Cincinnati for over fifty years, his passion for his work was surpassed only by his passion for life.
He will be remembered for many things: for his tales of mischief and adventure as a young man; for Emil’s Place on the Little Miami River that he built in his middle years; and for the massive totem poles he created in his seventies and eighties. His Christmas cards were a showcase of some of these adventures, and became a fourteen-year tradition eagerly awaited by family and friends each December.
Emil’s energy and love of life inspired and entertained, and made all those who loved him the better for it.
