Obituary

Justin Carl Lewis passed away on November 8, 2017 at age 99, from natural causes. He was preceded in death by his first wife of 53 years, Mildred Schoenberg Lewis and second wife of 19 years, Phyllis Jensen Lewis. He is survived by daughters Susan Kogon (Larry) and Nancy Hackert (Paul/Skip), grandchildren Sandra Leiker (Greg), Ronnie Lynn Hudson (Andrew), Brian Kogon (Karen) and Patricia Anne Ellis; great grandson Nicholas Kogon; and numerous step children, step grandchildren and step great & great great grandchildren. Mr. Lewis was born in Brooklyn, New York, NY on February 26, 1918. He was graduated from Brooklyn College, cum laude, in 1938. He moved to Washington, D.C. to work for the Federal Government in 1939 and retired in 1973. He was employed by the Veterans Administration, the U.S. Office of Education and the National Science Foundation in planning, program analysis and program evaluation activities. During World War II, he was a Lieutenant JG in the Navy and served in combat areas on the U.S.S. Stag in the Pacific theater of war. He pursued interests in the social and natural sciences and studied at the graduate level at American University. After his retirement, he was a docent for 17 years at the Smithsonian Institution, the National Portrait Gallery and the Museum of Natural History. Mr. Lewis was committed to humanitarian causes all of his life. He was active in the Civil Rights Movement from its earliest days and felt he had been instrumental in bringing about significant improvements in society. He also worked with deprived children as a tutor and Big Brother and as a volunteer in a sheltered workshop for mentally handicapped adults and worked for a Presidential Commission on the handicapped. After the death of his first wife in 1992, he moved to the Greater Cincinnati area where his interest in community service led him to the support of many organizations including Meals on Wheels, Head Start and an Ecumenical Food and Clothing Center. He was active in the Northern Hills Unitarian Universalist Fellowship. Mr. Lewis also found time for square and ballroom dancing, jogging, hiking, tennis, classical music, word puzzles, travel . . . and wants as his epitaph, “They Knew I Passed This Way.” Visitation will be held from 2 pm until time of Memorial Service and Celebration of Life at 2:30 pm on Sunday, November 12 at The Gathering at Northern Hills a UU Community, 460 Fleming Rd, Cincinnati, OH 45231. Memorial Contributions can be made to Valley Interfaith Food & Clothing, Cincinnati Freestore Foodbank, or to a Military Charity of your choice.
