Herbert Clay Messer passed away on Tuesday, October 2, 2017 in his Milford home surrounded by his wife and four children. Herb is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Barbara Rae (nee White), their four children; Karen Dell Messer-Bourgoin, Herbert Ray (Teresa) Messer, Kenneth Clay (Janet) Messer, and Angela Messer (Scott) Goorman, their seven grandchildren; Zachary Clay Messer, Jacob Glasco Messer, Claire Susan Messer, Chloe Rae Goorman Clayton Ray Messer, Charles Clay Goorman, and Nellie Belle Messer, his only brother; Harold (Carol) Messer, three sisters; Joyce (Hershel) Beeler, Marjorie (Edward) Eddie Smith, and Sandra (Max) Fultz, and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; Glasco and Lucille (nee Slusher) Messer, his eldest sister and brother in law; Marlene and Lee Kermos, and his son in law; John Bourgoin.Herb was born in Field, Kentucky on June 15, 1940, graduated from Red Bird Mission School, and attended Texas A & M. He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers for 57 years, where he served as President of Local 1198 at General Electric and was a Journeyman Electrician in Local 212, both in Cincinnati, OH. Upon his retirement, Herb and Barbara retired to the mountains of Tennessee residing in Tazewell and New Tazewell. Herb enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, golfing, traveling, and volunteering. He served as a Board Member for Habitat for Humanity, Red Bird Mission School, Tennessee State Foster Care Review Board, and supported the Glen and Ann Bowling Animal Shelter.
In addition to his own family, Herb loved his church family at the New Tazewell United Methodist Church, where he served on the Board of Trustees. Of particular fondness and meaning to him were the members of the Seekers Sunday School class and his “heroes”; Dr. Smith and Dr. Weir. A Memorial Visitation will be held at the New Tazewell United Methodist Church, 965 Old Knoxville Hwy, New Tazewell, TN 37825 on October 12, 2017 from 11-1 PM with a Memorial Service to follow. A Celebration of Life will be held on October 13, 2017 at Valley View Foundation, 790 Garfield Avenue, Milford, OH 45150 at Noon, with a luncheon to follow.Herbert C. Messer’s final resting place will be Spring Grove Cemetery, 4521 Spring Grove Avenue, Cincinnati OH 45232. Inurnment to be held privately. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in honor of Herbert C. Messer to the New Tazewell United Methodist Church.
