The Obituary of Robert T. Routt
After a long battle with cancer, Robert T. Routt went home to be with his Lord
and Savior on Thursday, March 2, 2017. He was a devoted husband, father, and
grandfather. If there is one word to sum up Robert’s life—its commitment! Whether it
was commitment to his family, job, or even his community—anyone who ever came in
contact with Robert Routt understood his level of commitment.
At an early age, Robert demonstrated his commitment to education by
graduating at the top of his class at Urbana High. Afterward, Robert worked his way
through school as an undergraduate at Anderson College where he majored in Sociology
and minored in psychology. He then went on to obtain his Masters Degree in Social
Work at the Ohio State University. It was during this period that Robert also served in
the United States Army where he worked as a social work specialist.
Next, Robert spent time working at Lebanon Correctional Institution as a social
worker before moving to Cincinnati where he spent the next 25 years at Memorial
Community Center—23 as the agency’s Executive Director. As the Executive Director,
Robert oversaw day care, senior, and youth programs while working with Cincinnati city
council and other public officials to improve the police community relations. He would
also tackle other issues that affected the underprivileged of the city.
Although Robert was very committed to his work at Memorial, he always had
time to deal with family and friends in need. Many that knew him, would not miss an
opportunity to thank him or tell others of their stories on how he helped or changed
their life for the better. Robert leaves behind his adoring wife of 55 years, Opal Irene,
two children, Robert (Carol) and Randall (Pam), and three grandchildren: Ryan, Marcus
