Obituary

Jacqueline Ryan Anderson, “Foloyan”, was born on March 29th, 1947 in Cincinnati, OH to the late Jacob Ryan and Lucille Ryan Crook.  She departed this life peacefully on October 12th, 2016.  Jacqueline accepted Christ at an early age and was raised as a Catholic.  She attended schools in Cincinnati and Cleveland, and went on to attend college at Miami University and the University of Cincinnati before receiving her degree from Union Institute.

Jacqueline was united in Holy Matrimony to Byron Anderson on September 23rd, 1972. Together, they enjoyed life to the fullest - travelling extensively, attending concerts, and engaging in local activities. This cherished union of 44 years produced their most beloved and proudest accomplishments, their three (3) daughters – Deanna, Marcia, and Ryan. Being an accomplished dancer and an arts tour-de-force herself, Jacqueline opened the world of the arts to her daughters.  From the time they were toddlers, Jacqueline’s girls had ballet lessons at the University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music, played the flute, violin and viola, attended plays at the Playhouse in the Park, visited museums and cultural exhibits, and travelled across seas for educational and musical opportunities. There was nothing she didn’t offer her girls.

It was Jacqueline’s passion, love, and joy for life that endeared all who met her.  In the 1960s, she, along with Mrs. Kathryn Allison Johnson, founded the Foloyan Dancers, in Evanston, which enriched the community through ballet, jazz, modern, and African dance performances and youth classes.  In the 1980s, she began volunteering with the Melrose YMCA Water Babies Program which taught African-American youth swimming, water safety, and job-readiness.  It was there where her daughters enrolled in swim lessons, swim team, and drill team.  To her family and friends, Jacqueline was one of a kind - the one who could quote Star Trek and science fiction films while dancing to Motown…and she always had a pretty smile on her face.

Jacqueline spent her career dedicated to improving the lives of children and her community.  She retired from the City of Cincinnati Health Department after thirty years of service.  She began her career as a Lead Program Director, and in later years she served as a Sickle Cell Coordinator, District Health Officer, and Child and Family Health Services Administrator.  Before retirement, her most recent assignment was as an Administrative Specialist in the Women, Infants, and Children program.

She leaves to cherish her memory: her husband, Byron; three daughters, Deanna (Robert), Marcia and Ryan; two grandsons, Anderson and Blake; one aunt, Pauline; a special cousin, Paulette; and a host of family and friends to whom she brought joy and love throughout her life.
