Since 2009 Spring Grove Cemetery and Arboretum has collected thousands of retired, torn and worn American flags from Memorial Day weekend through the end of June. Each year members of Boy Scout Troop 641 of St. John the Baptist conduct Spring Grove’s annual public ceremony to decommission those flags at the Civil War Section of Spring Grove amongst the 1000 Civil War soldiers interred there. The ceremony includes a formal scout color guard, presentation of the colors, pledge of allegiance, the actual incineration of the flags, and concludes with the lowering of the flag at dusk. The ashes of the incinerated flags are buried at the base of the cannon and flag pole in the Historic Civil War Section of the cemetery in the days following the ceremony
