6/26/2018 - 6/26/2018 |
7:00 PM to 8:00 PM
Location: Spring Grove Cemetery & Arboretum
The weather forecast for this evening has forced us to make a decision that we just hate to make. We are canceling the Flag Decommissioning ceremony, however, all of the flags that have been turned in will be respectfully decommissioned in a private ceremony. The ashes will in turn be buried at the base of the canon in the Civil War section.
Scouts decommission flags within Historic Spring Grove Cemetery
You are invited to our annual public ceremony to decommission retired, torn and worn flags at the Historic Civil War Section of Spring Grove amongst the 1000 Civil War soldiers interred there. Hundreds of Flags have been collected since Memorial Day weekend at the cemetery. The public is invited to experience this moving ceremony on Tuesday, June 26 at 7:00 p.m. The ceremony will include a formal scout color guard, presentation of the colors, pledge of allegiance, the actual incineration of the flags, and will conclude with the lowering of the flag at dusk and Taps. The ashes of the incinerated flags will be buried at the base of the cannon and flag pole in the Historic Civil War Section of the cemetery. Ample parking is available and handicap parking will be provided. The ceremony is expected to last 45 minutes.
There is no charge to be part of Tuesday evening’s event. We are proud to share this ceremony with our community and we ask our guests to bring their own lawn chairs. No reservations are necessary.
