Spring Grove turns time back to the 1800's
Historic Spring Grove Cemetery and Arboretum welcomes back the Ohio Valley Carriage Club
for their third annual vintage 'drive' through the arboretum. The Carriage Club is a 'group
of people who are interested in driving horses and/or collecting horse drawn vehicles.'
Members of the club will be dressed in period clothing as they escort their horse drawn
carriages throughout the cemetery roads.
The afternoon drive will be a glimpse back in time to the original visitors to the cemetery.
The following excerpt is from the cemetery's board minutes of July 31, 1857: "A report by the
gatekeeper stated the following: 'Number of carriages and buggies, persons on foot and strangers
from other cities in the United States, England and Ireland for the month of July: (619) 2-horse
carriages; (1,540) one-horse buggies or carriages; (424) persons on foot." Horse drawn carriages
were forbidden to be ridden faster than people could walk and there was a very strict speed limit
of no more than 6 miles per hour for any animal powered vehicle within 100 yards of the cemetery.
The carriages will originate their tour of the cemetery at 2:00PM just inside the main entrance
of the cemetery. There is NO CHARGE to come and see how the cemetery looked on an
average Sunday back in the 1850's. VISITORS WILL NOT BE PERMITTED TO RIDE THE
CARRIAGES AS THIS IS A PRIVATE GROUP*.
The Carriage Club is expected to be in the cemetery for approximately two hours.
*Spring Grove Cemetery sponsors carriage rides on SUNDAY, APRIL 22nd at our History in Bloom event.
