Spring Grove Champion Trees
Spring Grove Cemetery & Arboretum has 21 state champion trees and 2 national champion trees. If a tree is designated a champion then it is the largest specimen in the state or the country. The state of Ohio actively searches for large trees but that is not the only way a tree can become a champion. Anyone can nominate a tree. A tree nominee is measured in three ways: trunk circumference (in.), crown width (ft.), and height (ft.). Please visit the state's website - http://www.dnr.state.oh.us/tabid/4806/default.aspx - to find specific instructions on how to correctly measure and nominate a tree. Current champion trees are remeasured by the state on a five year rotation. Also on the state's website has a list of all of Ohio's state and national champion, their measurements, and their locations. Spring Grove's champions are scattered all over the arboretum grounds however their locations are notated on the visitor's map. All of the champion trees at Spring Grove have a boulder with a plaque notating their status near the base of each tree.
